Is the drug or the weight loss causing hair shedding?

In nearly every case, the weight loss is the cause. Shedding reported on Ozempic, Wegovy, Zepbound or compounded GLP-1s is usually telogen effluvium: after a big physical stressor, such as losing weight quickly, a larger-than-normal share of hair follicles moves into the resting phase together and then sheds.

The same thing happens after bariatric surgery, crash dieting, childbirth and serious illness, none of which involve a GLP-1. In clinical trials, a small minority of participants reported hair loss, more often than on placebo, which fits with faster weight loss being the trigger rather than the drug damaging hair.

Can Wegovy make your hair fall out?

Wegovy can be followed by hair shedding for the same reason as Ozempic: Wegovy is semaglutide, the identical molecule given at a weight-loss dose, and hair shedding appears among the side effects reported in its trials.

The trigger is how much and how fast weight comes off, which sends hair into a resting-then-shedding cycle (telogen effluvium). That explains why the same pattern shows up with tirzepatide, bariatric surgery and aggressive diets. The timeline, recovery outlook and practical steps below apply to Wegovy just as they do to Ozempic.

Does hair grow back after GLP-1 shedding?

Yes, in most cases. Telogen effluvium typically starts 2-4 months after the trigger, which is why shedding often begins a few months into treatment, just as weight loss picks up.

It settles on its own once weight stabilizes, and most people see their usual fullness return within several months to a year.

Look at the pattern. Telogen effluvium thins hair evenly across the scalp; it does not cause a receding hairline or bald patches.

A receding hairline or thinning at the crown points more toward androgenetic (pattern) hair loss that the weight loss simply made easier to notice, and that is a separate condition.

Semaglutide plans and prices by provider

Each provider's published semaglutide plan, sorted from lowest price, with the terms listed under every price.

How can you reduce hair shedding on a GLP-1?

Four steps help:
  • Put protein first. A smaller appetite can quietly cut your protein intake, and hair is made of protein. Most GLP-1 clinicians advise prioritizing it at every meal.
  • Avoid losing faster than necessary. If shedding is heavy, ask your provider about pacing your titration, since slower loss is easier on hair.
  • Rule out deficiencies. Low iron, vitamin D or zinc and thyroid problems all worsen shedding; your clinician can check them.
  • Be patient. The follicles are resting, not dead.

Is GLP-1 Treatment Right for You?

GLP-1 medication is prescription-only: a licensed clinician has to decide it is appropriate, and it is not a fit for everyone. Side effects are possible, and they tend to show up in the first few weeks while your body adapts.

Results are usually best when the medication is paired with simple daily habits, such as balanced meals and regular movement.

For both safety and lasting progress, pick a provider that screens you properly before prescribing and keeps following up once treatment starts.

What if it looks like pattern hair loss instead?

If the change shows up at the hairline or crown rather than as all-over shedding, it may be pattern hair loss, which does not resolve on its own once your weight stabilizes. It is a separate condition with its own evidence-based prescription treatments, including finasteride, minoxidil (oral or topical) and dutasteride.

Raise it with your clinician or a dermatologist early instead of waiting it out, and keep your GLP-1 provider informed so your weight-loss plan and any hair treatment fit together.

Should hair shedding make you stop your GLP-1?

Usually not. Shedding on a GLP-1 is common, generally temporary and mostly a by-product of fast weight loss rather than the medication itself.

Keep protein high, slow the pace if shedding is heavy, check for deficiencies, and give follicles the months they need to recover.

If the thinning follows a pattern, do not just wait; see a clinician. This article is general information, not medical advice, so discuss your own situation with your provider.
