Key points

  • Tirzepatide (Mounjaro/Zepbound) is the most effective option, with up to 22.5% body-weight loss in SURMOUNT, because it acts on both GLP-1 and GIP receptors.
  • Semaglutide (Ozempic/Wegovy) has the longest track record, about 15% average loss in STEP, and the widest availability through telehealth.
  • Liraglutide (Saxenda) gives smaller results (about 5-8% in SCALE) and is injected daily, but it is still an option for people who do not respond to other GLP-1s.
  • Brand-name drugs cost $1,000-$1,300+ a month; compounded semaglutide starts at a verified $49/month and compounded tirzepatide at $89.

What is the best GLP-1 for weight loss?

Tirzepatide produces the most weight loss, semaglutide is the most established, and liraglutide is a gentler fallback. Those three, sold as Mounjaro/Zepbound, Ozempic/Wegovy and Saxenda, account for most GLP-1 weight loss prescriptions.

They differ in how they work, how much weight people lose and what they cost. For background, see how GLP-1 medications work.

Does tirzepatide cause the most weight loss?

Yes. Tirzepatide led to up to 22.5% body-weight loss in the SURMOUNT trials, the highest of the three.

It is a dual agonist, acting on GLP-1 and GIP receptors, which gives it a broader metabolic effect. Tirzepatide is sold as Mounjaro for diabetes and Zepbound for weight loss.

See our Zepbound vs Wegovy comparison.

Why is semaglutide the most widely used GLP-1?

Semaglutide has the longest track record for weight loss and is the GLP-1 most widely offered by telehealth providers. In the STEP trials, people lost about 15% of body weight on average. You can get it as brand-name Ozempic or Wegovy, or as a compounded version. Compare semaglutide providers.

Is Saxenda (liraglutide) still a good option?

For some people. Liraglutide, sold as Saxenda, was the first GLP-1 approved specifically for weight loss.

Its results are smaller, about 5-8% of body weight in the SCALE trial, and it is injected daily rather than weekly. It is prescribed less often today but remains an option for patients who do not respond well to other GLP-1s.

Is GLP-1 Treatment Right for You?

GLP-1 medication is prescription-only: a licensed clinician has to decide it is appropriate, and it is not a fit for everyone. Side effects are possible, and they tend to show up in the first few weeks while your body adapts.

Results are usually best when the medication is paired with simple daily habits, such as balanced meals and regular movement.

For both safety and lasting progress, pick a provider that screens you properly before prescribing and keeps following up once treatment starts.

How much does each GLP-1 cost per month?

Brand-name prices:
  • Wegovy: $1,300+/month.
  • Zepbound: $1,000+/month.
  • Saxenda: $1,300+/month.
Compounded versions cost far less: semaglutide from a verified $49/month and tirzepatide from $89/month. See the semaglutide cost breakdown and our full cost guide.

Which GLP-1 should you choose?

Match the drug to your priority:
  • Most weight loss: tirzepatide.
  • Longest track record and widest availability: semaglutide.
  • An alternative if the others do not suit you: liraglutide.
Your provider will make the final call based on your health profile. The matching quiz can point you to a provider that offers the medication that fits your goals.
